Engage-Explore-Enjoy
Register to participate.
All young scientists wishing to display a project at the expo must register in advance through this online form. We strongly encourage early registration in order to reserve your space. Final registration deadline is January 18.
Note: No Registration is required to attend the event and view the exhibits.
Projects should be student driven.
Project ideas should come from the students, and the project should be driven by them. Parents, no matter how tempting, try and let children choose their own topics since they will be more likely to work on their presentation without reminders. If they get stuck perhaps brainstorm ideas with them and use best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue or when students need advice. For especially young kids, parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that the kids be able to call the project their own. Please refer to the handouts sent home via KidMail for more detailed instructions.
Working with someone else.
You may work on your project independently, or you may optionally work with partner/s (must be student/s at Newcastle Elementary).
Need help choosing a topic?
When it comes to choosing a topic, what have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, the school library has books with examples of science projects. Please refer to FAQ and Useful Websites for additional help on choosing a topic.
Judging and awards.
Our science expo is non-competitive, as our goal is simply to encourage scientific exploration and discovery and promote a deep lifelong passion for science and technology. Each participant will have an opportunity to briefly present their project to an evaluator, and they will each receive critical feedback, a certificate and a souvenir.
Photos
During the evening of the science expo, on the big screen we will be displaying a slide show of photos taken by you! So parents -- while your young scientist is busy conducting that wild experiment, sneak out your digital camera and capture some shots. Then upload them here by February 25, so we can include them in the slide show. Note: All Photos may not be included in the slide show.
Volunteers needed!
A big event like the science expo wouldn't be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. We have all kinds of different jobs to be done, so if you think you can spare an hour or two on the day of the expo or before, we would love your help. Please contact Ram Sarma at rvallabh2@gmail.com and sign up now!
Project restrictions
Projects may not include living organisms, including plants; taxidermy specimens; preserved animals or animal parts; body fluids; hazardous substances; harmful chemicals; weapons; flames or highly flammable materials. Displays also cannot include sharp or breakable items or dry ice.
Financial Assistance Available to Those Who Qualify
